It is the weight of the drill fabric per square yard. Lighter drill (6 to 8 oz) is cooler and cheaper; heavier drill (10 to 14 oz) lasts longer on rough work.
A wing thumb is cut as part of the palm and gives more room at the base of the thumb. A straight thumb is sewn in separately and gives a closer fit. Both use the same fabric and knit wrist.
